8 SKIBOARD SHOOT-OUT

On my quest for a perfect pair of skiboards I tried some and here they are. I tested them in several categories - durability, speed, handling, powder, jumps, landings and carving. The "grade" I give each pair is only based on the following categories and in no way influenced by the companies reputation, at least I try. If this helps - I am 5'11"and weigh 165 lbs.

Just to try and keep the playing field level, I used the same kind of ski-wax while testing or riding each board. And waxed them everyday before riding.

The only impression these Skiboards made on me was that you can carve in them. You can get very low, with speed completely horizontal on a flat ground, and get back up without falling. Talk about falling, you will be tempted to carve too far and wipe out. You can make your snowboarder friends jealous. Other then that these boards are OK but not great. These boards have very interesting bindings which always make you feel off balance. The middle section is set on a square riser, but the front and the back can rock back and forth with little rubber stoppers between the binding plate and the Skiboard. Both the front and the back have 1/4 inch travel which produces a rocking motion that takes time to get used to. They are not fast, not good for freestyle, but may be a great first set of boards for the shorter and lighter riders.

CANON M7

I only used these boards for one day but did not like them, I don't know whether they are not for me or I am not right for them, but I do know that they have won the X-Games and some believe that what counts, I don't. They are the longest pair here and therefore they are the fastest, and the heaviest. They are only good in the air, and landings are a breeze once you can figure out how to get them up there. They are long and have a generous sidecut, however since they are long, they cannot carve as well as some other models. They are also very good in powder, up-to 8 inches feels natural. The boards and bindings combination is virtually indestructible even after a bad 720 landing, but the colors are ugly and seem to discourage people from trying the sport. These boards proved themselves in the X-Games, but do not get my good side because their characteristics are more of skis then of Skiboards.

DYNASTAR TWINS

I was looking forward to riding these boards however when I finally got the chance most of my expectations were much higher then the actual results. This is a very solid pair. They perform well in most conditions but do not have an edge that makes them unique. The huge bindings are intimidating but once they are under you can hardly notice their weight. The Twins are wide and makes powder gentle, fast and easy, however they are perfectly strait and without a sidecut you can't carve well, but still better then Salomon. The best part about them is the landings. They distribute the force of the impact evenly and are relatively easy to land big jumps such as 20 foot table tops. These boards feel at home in the air and feel relatively good all around, however don't plan on smoking you skier friends on them because thats one thing the Twin lacks.

SALOMON BUZZ 90

These were my first pair of Snowblades. They are the ones responsible of bringing me into the sport. They are fast but not too fast. Powder is a problem most of the time and carving is not as easy or fun as some others but riding on the east coast groomed hardpack is the best. I spent the most time on these boards and liked them a lot. They are long and thin- that makes them an easy transition from skis because you can keep your feet close together without having the boards overlap. It is very easy to get air on them, and I can easily clear 30-40 foot tabletops. However landings are, most of the time, painful. There are rubber shock absorbers in the binding system but they are not that useful. These boards are great but they lack the width of Skiboards to make them perfect all around. The ideal candidate for the Buzz is someone who wants to go really fast and look good.

SALOMON PROPELLER

These boards are very similar to the Salomon Buzz, however they were marketed to younger and more extreme riders. Propellers are fun but slow. They are wider then most other Salomon models but are still too thin to thin to go through powder. They are short and very nimble. Half-pipe is the best place to feel their full potential. You can get lots of air and the landings in the half-pipe will not kill you. My favorite part about any Salomon but especially the Propeller, is the bindings. They can literally be adjusted in seconds to any size. This gives the rider many options. you can move the ski boot all the way back so you can enjoy the most speed and groomed runs. Or you can move the mounting position all the way forward so it is in the near perfect center of the Snowblade. That will give you better balance for executing tricks. These are probably the best pair of skiboards to have if you only skiboard a couple of times each year.

SALOMON GROM

Grom, just like the name implies, sounds rather small and childish. That because they are specifically designed for children or very little people. I don't know what I was thinking when I rode them. They feel small, cramped and fragile. They are wider then other Salomons but feel microscopic. On a lighter note, they were probably the most exciting pair of Snowblades I ever tried. It was not Skiboarding anymore, but rather figure skating on snow. You can do the most amazing tricks on them, 720s and 900s are a breeze but landing them is nearly impossible. You can spin yourself like a top but expect to hit the ground very hard. I would not recommend them for a full grown adult, but there is no better choice out there for a child. They are shorter and wide therefore provide more then adequate stability for anyone under 4 feet. They are small and can be used a ski teaching tool for kids, but you should not expect your kids to ever ski again, they are that much fun.

MICROSKI

I bought this pair hoping to try some shorter models, however I was very disappointed in the quality of these boards. They do not look sturdy, and the steel edge does not go all the way around, the front and the tail are naked. The bindings rattled at high speed, and were slower then other boards. Handling was very good, you don't have to force them into every turn, but they seem to know where to go. Jumps and landings are very uncertain, and stressful on the rider. I found out the hard way, but these were never designed for free-style. These did have a strong point, they are great for carving, I got very near horizontal but not as low as with EasyRiders. These are great skiboards for kids, since they are 60cm long, and would be a great cheap first pair to get the hang of the sport.

GROOVE GREEN TAXI

Only after getting this pair I realized that Groove make only two Skiboards - 90cm and 82cm. The Green Taxi is the 90cm version. Groove has the best selection of colors and designs then any other company. But that’s not why I like them so much. They are very light, strong and wide. Since the boards are long they go fast enough. Since they are wide and have a huge sidecut they are extremely fun to carve with. Near horizontals and overkill wipeouts are a common problem among the riders. The length and width are a perfect combination for powder, you can easily cruise through 8 inches stop and start again without any problems. Finally the best part about the Green Taxis is that jumps and landings are remarkably easy. I have not had much time to ride these boards but from the time I had, I liked them enough to actually buy a pair and keep it. This review will be changed and updated once the snow begins to fall.
